Do you have a Donation Box?

5/1/2023

Here's a tip for keeping extra clutter from building up in your home: have a donation box.  Do you already have a designated spot for donations?  A "home" for donations in your home, so to speak.  This might be in your closet, by the exit door, in the garage, or even in your car... somewhere you can easily get to but that is out of the way.  It also doesn't have to be a box; it might be a bag, basket, or some other container of your choice.  All that truly matters is that you have a designated spot for donations.

Why is this helpful?  It means that whenever you come across an item that you no longer need in your home, you already know where it goes: directly into the donation box.

Grief & Organizing: When should I go through my spouse's belongings?

4/1/2023

Today we are going to talk a little bit about the intersection between grief and home organizing.  When a loved one passes away, we are often left to the task of not only grieving their absences but also facing the physical reality of their items left behind.

When should I go through my spouse's belongings?  Notice the word "should".  This is not a math equation with one answer.  There is no one "right answer".  This is a very personal question that will vary.  Much like the grief process, each person will be ready to go through different categories of their spouse's belongings at different times.

How My Sock Drawer Helps Me Pray

10/25/2021

Guest Blog Post by Heather Bayless

Can I share with you a quirky confession?  Of all the areas of my home that need organizing, I am most particular about my sock drawer.  For years I have kept everything color coordinated to Pinterest perfection.

Patterned socks go to the left, work socks in the middle, and tights to the right. It’s my favorite spot to organize. It’s not a drawer I’m about to throw open for my guests to inspect but I’m oddly proud of how well I manage that two feet of space. I don’t pretend to be perfect: my abode is full with uncared for corners and neglected nooks. My dining table is used more for junk mail than communion, and I write this after having eaten 10 York peppermint patties in one sitting. But there is something persistently important to me about this sock drawer.

Choosing a New Year's 'Word of the Year'

12/31/2020

Disclaimer:  Flourish Organizing may receive commissions from some links.

Years ago, I heard about this idea for choosing a word for the year instead of making New Year’s Resolutions. As someone who thrives in environments with clear rules and boundaries, I always made goals for the year. However, I also felt frustrated... I found myself making the same resolutions each year and also never quite living up to them. It felt like I was in a never ending state of being “not good enough” and asking myself “Why can’t I succeed at this?”
